CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Harriett

The sun begins to set over the horizon, leaving that gloomy, grey feel to the air. Rain splatters against the window screen of Emily’s ugly green banger of a car, only adding to the dreary night. As the car back fires, making a popping sound, I can’t help but feel for my best friend. Her pride and joy, which she named Betty, got ruined in a crash we were involved in last year. The insurance wouldn’t pay out and the car was a total right-off. Charlotte offered to compensate her for the loss, but Emily refused, wanting to wait until she could get one on finance. It gets her from A to B, so she isn’t bothered, but I know she hides the fact she’s ashamed and worried when her daughter has to ride with her.

I’m not complaining. This evening, it got us to Colin’s offices, a place I’ve been determined to visit since the news broke yesterday about my occupation. There’re a few cars left in the car park, and it’s eerie and still, but this is what I wanted.

After extensive research on Colin, I found his home and work address. Going to his home will be too easy. And he has kids and a wife I don’t want to scare or worry. I also don’t want to cause a scene so big it makes trouble for River. Which is why I opted to wait until this evening to go inside, knowing from my chat with River, this will be the best time.

Gabby leans forward from the back, sticking her head in the middle of the two seats. She chomps down on a crisp, staring up at the building. “Tell me again why we are waiting?”

“I’m waiting for River to message that he’s at the gym,” I remind her. “As soon as he does, that means their meeting is over and Colin will be driving back here.”

Olivia clears her throat. “Are you sure he’s driving back here?”

“Yes. Because I heard him telling Colin he wasn’t going to push back his training. He’s with his coach tonight.”

“My stomach is turning,” Emily comments, her voice filled with nerves. “I don’t want to get arrested.”

“We aren’t going to get arrested. Not after what we found out. He won’t want that getting out, and once it’s on record with the police, the press will get hold of the information and leak it,” I point out.

I knew I had Colin pegged the minute I first met him. I’m rarely wrong. Which is why I questioned the affairs River mentioned. There had to be more than he told me about. And I was right. The second I started asking questions, people began talking.

“Anyone else still shocked over Trixie’s entire family being centred around stripping?” Olivia asks, munching on her own snacks. I lean over the seat, grabbing a bag of Haribo from her lap. “They could start their own reality TV show. They could name it Keeping up with the Strippers.”

I hide my laughter. “Her nan even teaches it.
